Cheseborough Memorial

Location: Tsugaru City, Shariki Area

Cheseborough Memorial Memorial Cross Tower

Description:

This memorial is a tribute to those who lost their lives in the shipwreck of the Cheseborough off these shores in 1889, as well as the bravery of local villagers who set out in the heavy surf to rescue as many survivors as possible. The Cheseborough was originally built in Bath, Maine, and the story of the rescue and the hospitality shown towards the rescued crew became the foundation for a sister city relationship between Tsugaru City and Bath. The site includes a small park as well as a four-story tower that gives a commanding view of the surrounding area.
